Leaning back in her seat, [my mother] held her breath as I searched for the words. 'I—I was raped. It happened months ago, around the time I moved in to university. I’ve been too scared to tell anyone, but I’m telling you now'.
“
I was hesitant and intimidated, but having both a professor and journalist refer legal counsel was compelling. I figured if these people feel so strongly about my situation, perhaps it might be worth giving my life one more chance.
“
“[W]ith my hands clenched in my lap, I confessed Chaos is constant, Isolation can be mean sometimes, and Happiness cannot be held. And that is why continuing therapy is crucial—no amount of money could erase the trauma we endured…I would stand by her side for as long as she would have my support.
“
Having earned tens of thousands of dollars in academic scholarships to fourteen colleges and universities, at the time, SiennaMarísa was perhaps not fully focused on the dangers that lurk around university campuses, especially during the first four weeks of the first semester—a period of time some colleges call the 'red zone'.
“
The bottom line is if your son or daughter is about to start college, they must be warned [about sexual violence and] alcohol. They…must be warned that no means no.
“
To seniors in high school and to those in college, please take heed. Sexual violence is unacceptable and causes real harm. In some instances, survivors attempt or commit suicide…Remember, 1 in 4 students' lives are affected. I cannot say it enough.
